Year 6 blog
In year 6, we have been learning about natural disasters. The children were very interested in volcanoes and we have decided to study this in more depth. During our Geography unit of work, we have looked at how the Earth was formed and what it looks like today. We investigated the different types of tectonic plate boundaries and we created a knowledge organiser of the different facts about volcanoes. Here is an example:
From this, the children have used their human geography skill and physical geographical knowledge to design and create their own volcanic holiday resort. They analysed travel magazines and they pulled out language as a group to learn how to make their resort sound exciting and interesting. They drew upon their knowledge of their writing toolkits to ensure they were using Year 6 expected grammar and punctuation. The children designed their own resorts, here are some examples below:
A key part in their writing journey is to write from different perspectives and with different formalities. The children decided that they wanted to write a negative review of their hotel due to the volcano near their resort erupting. They tried to make it sound informal and less persuasive so they could show the change of form. It has been lovely to be able to combine writing and geography to complete this piece of work. The children also enjoyed publishing their work on the chrome books. Here are some examples of their negative reviews below:
