VERY hungry caterpillars

This week on the plot!

As the half-term draws to a close, we have been doing our last-minute preparations to leave our beloved plants for the winter break.

Our onions, daffodils and crocuses are beginning to sprout! How exciting! Although, some cheeky birds have tried to peck them out. But fear not, the Eco Warriors are near and we carried out some replanting.

Our Brussel Sprouts are doing very well and are on track for our Christmas dinners, but again, we have had some hungry little visitors. Some would say, VERY hungry caterpillars, therefore two of the plants have unfortunately been stripped of their leaves. While it may be disheartening to witness caterpillars indulging in a feast on our plants, it's crucial to recognise that this interaction is a part of the natural order. Caterpillars play a role in the ecosystem, and their presence can indicate a healthy, biodiverse garden.

The little minibeasts must love our garden as they have only left us with a few radishes to harvest. This time, the snails and slugs have tried their luck. But this is all a learning experience for us at Mansel Park and we are going to research some ways to control the garden visitors.

In our parent plots, you may have seen our lovely broad beans – they are very well established and we are looking to get an early harvest from them.

We still have no update for you with regards to our hedgehog home. But we believe we may have established the issue and the location may just not be quite right, so we reflect, reevaluate and we will be moving the house to a new location, in hope to welcome some little guests.

A massive congratulations to all the children who have participated in the Waste Free Lunch Box challenge. They have played a crucial part in contributing to saving the planet: one lunch box at a time.

It has been a jam-packed autumn term, with so much going on for the Eco Team and we have so much more to come next half term. We look forward to sharing them with you.
