Remembrance Day.

10th November 2023

Today, at Mansel Park, we had a special assembly all about Remembrance Day.

It is a time where we can stop and take a moment to reflect and remember all those brave men and women, who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives, in selfless service for their country.

Mr Peters spoke about why tomorrow is an important date and showed us some facts and pictures of different war memorials and talked about the history of Remembrance Day.

Some Year 6 students read out some poetry they had written at home from the inspiration of the famous remembrance day poem “Flanders Fields” by John McCrae they had learnt about in their writing lessons.  He wrote the poem in the spring of 1915, shortly after losing a friend in Ypres, a Canadian doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae after seeing poppies growing in battle-scarred fields.

The assembly finished with a beautiful rendition of ‘Flanders Fields’ from Mansel Parks’ Singing Club choir. Please see below to listen.
