Year 6 Update.
Last week, we had an amazing time learning all about what it means to an archaeologist and how university can help you to develop the skills you need to explore different career paths. On Monday we learnt all about Charles Darwin, who was a famous biologist for his scientific theory of evolution. We made a timeline of all the important events in his life and tested lots of his own experiments. We looked at different bird beaks and how effective they are at collecting food, we also matched the animals to their habitats and lifestyles as well as performing simple tasks without the use of our thumbs.
On Tuesday we learned about the different species of animals and how they have evolved over time. We also looked at how humans have evolved from their most likely recent common ancestor, Homo erectus, which means ‘upright man’ in Latin. We drew around our friends and labelled the body parts and also got to try being archaeologists and dug for artefacts in the sand to find physical remains that we had previously labelled on our friends. On Thursday we learnt all about the different courses we can study at university. Did you know you can study over 65,000 university courses in over 160 different universities? We then discussed and made our leaves on what we would like to study when we want to go to university and presented them to the rest of the class to go on our university tree ready for Friday! Each day we had a secret mission (ssshhhh) which went towards our final presentation for our graduation on Friday. It was a really fun day! We got to walk round the University of Southampton to see all the different buildings, we got to wear our cap and gowns and present our findings and why we want to study at university to our friends and family members. We all really enjoyed the experience and would fully recommend it to everyone! Did you know that Southampton University is a research-intensive university? This means they are pioneering experts in finding out more, in order to: know more, remember more and do more! You can find out more about Southampton University here: https://www.southampton.ac.uk/
