In Year 5 we recognise that we all have our part to play in caring for our planet including the teachers! The amount of energy we use has a huge impact upon environment causing significant problems including air pollution and climate change. We have therefore decided to take matters into our own hands, and reduce the energy consumption within our school.

At break time and lunch times, groups of students from Year 5 have walked the school identifying any classrooms where lights, interactive whiteboards and computers have been left on. As well as turning these off, the names of these classes have been recorded, and those teachers whose names continue to appear politely notified and encouraged not to leave them on again!

As time has passed, we have noted classes and teachers are now more aware of their energy usage and the impact that this can have. If everybody is to make a small change such as turning the lights off when they leave a room, then this will have a huge impact upon the future health of our planet.

If you would like to reduce your energy consumption then here are some simple things you can do at home:

  • Turn the switch off at the wall when you are not using an appliance

  • Switch off lights when you are not in a room

  • Replace all the light bulbs in your house with energy saving ones

  • Shut doors and close curtains to keep the heat in

Let us know how you get on!
