Year 1 blog

Welcome back to Year 1!

Writing:

We have had a special visitor from Norman the slug who wants to be a snail! We have used our five senses to generate adjectives to describe the different shells for Norman to try. We are now moving on to generating adjectives to describe different emotions. This will lead on to retelling the story of Norman the slug, putting together all the amazing writing skills we have learnt so far.

Maths

We have started this term by deepening our understanding of place value. We have been using dienes, tens frames and numicon to match representations within 50. We have found different ways to count in the 10's, this will help us when we are counting by grouping. We are now moving on to measurement and looking at capacity, volume and length. We will be practically exploring this unit, comparing objects in the classroom. We are very excited to use the scales, jugs and rulers!

History

Year 1 are venturing back in time for our first history topic this year. We have begun by investigating a variety of historic sources which all link to our topic. We saw pictures of lifeboats, a shipwreck and a storm. Once we completed our investigation we found we are learning about the heroine Grace Darling, who rescued people in a horrible storm. We will continue this term learning about her heroic actions and how she put her life at risk to save those in need. We will compare lifeboat safety between now and when Grace Darling rescued the 9 people. We will also discuss why she is such a hero!
