Year 5 and 6

At the beginning of January, our upper key stage 2 children braved the wet and cold conditions by participating in the Bikeability cycling proficiency program. Its aim was to enhance biking skills, promote road safety awareness, and instil a sense of responsibility while riding on the road. The program catered to a diverse group, including those learning to ride, refining existing skills, and advancing to on-road experiences.

For beginners, the program served as an invaluable opportunity to learn the basics of riding a bike. Trained instructors provided step-by-step guidance, fostering a supportive environment for these children to overcome their initial challenges. As a result, many participants successfully acquired the fundamental skills necessary for bike riding.

A significant amount of the participants already possessed basic biking skills. For them, the program served as a platform to refine their techniques and build confidence. Engaging exercises and drills allowed these children to refine their abilities, ultimately boosting their self-assurance in handling various situations that may occur.

A crucial component of the Bikeability programme involved taking participants onto the road, where they could apply their learned skills in real-world situations. Emphasis was placed on road safety education, teaching children about traffic rules, signals, and responsible biking behaviour. Instructors provided valuable insights into navigating junctions, understanding road signs, and promoting courteous conduct while sharing the road with other users.

The Bikeability cycling proficiency programme showcased remarkable outcomes for participating Year 5 and 6 children. Many successfully transitioned from novices to proficient riders, while others enhanced their existing skills and gained confidence in their abilities. The emphasis on road safety education contributed to a heightened awareness of responsible biking behaviour, preparing these young cyclists for safe road usage in the future.
