Year 3 blog

Welcome back to the Year 3 blog! We have been working hard in all of our subjects, learning about lots of exciting topics!

In English we have been learning about refugees, through the book called the Wisp. We have learnt about the contrast between hope and despair and have had some fantastic discussions! We have been learning about poetry and exploring different poems, learning the differences between active and descriptive poems. We have practised reading them and have written our own, with all our new knowledge!

In maths, we have been learning more multiplication and division, using our previous learning to help us. We have been working really hard on our times tables and we are now understanding the link between multiplication and division, working out division equations mentally, using our multiplication facts to help us. We have even been multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers!

Our History unit this term is on the Egyptians, which we have been finding really interesting. The children have been fascinated by the differences between then and now and by the way the Egyptians lived. They couldn’t believe that when Egyptians died, their organs were taken out and put into canopic jars! The children were also lucky enough to explore a tomb of their own full of historic artefacts. It is great to see such enthusiasm in their learning!

In Science, we have been learning that a force is a push and pull and looking at examples. We have been doing experiments, to find out how much force we need to put on an object for it to move, finding out that the heavier (not bigger necessarily) objects will need more force. We then looked at friction and used different surfaces to see how this effected the speed a toy car travelled. We found out that the bumpier a surface is, the more friction there is, and therefore the slower the car will go. We thought about situations when you may need more friction (such as on walking boots) and when you may need less (when skiing!).

Keep up the hard work year 3!
