Welcome back to Year 1

We are excited to be back at school and ready for the learning adventures that await us this term! Before we get started, we would just like to share some of our wonderful pieces of art from our Art Week.

During the last week of term we had a week dedicated to learning different art skills and practicing these techniques. We learnt how to use a paintbrush, mix colours and use different shades. We thoroughly enjoyed this week as it allowed us to be creative and explore art. Our masterpieces are now displayed around our classrooms.

This term we are writing about the book Norman The Slug With A Silly Shell by Sue Hendra. We are going to be innovating and creating our own shells using different objects around the classroom. We have started this term by looking at objects that would make a good shell and objects that would not make a good shell. We are using adjectives to describe these. We can’t wait for you to read our shell descriptions.

In Maths we have been continuing to learn about addition. We are learning different strategies to add such as jottings, counting on and using a number line.  We also use multi-link and numicon to help us. Soon we will be moving onto subtraction!

Our Science learning this term is about Materials. We have to help the 4th Little Pig build a house which will withstand the Big Bad Wolf. This week we explored the difference between materials and objects. We had to sort the items into the classroom and use stem sentences to help us, for example Nevaeh said “The object is a pencil. The material that it is made of is wood.”Next week we are going to be exploring the properties of materials to see which would be the most appropriate for a house.
