Year 1 - The Guide Dogs Association
In Year 1 this week we had a special visitor! Carole from The Guide Dogs Association came into school with her working dog Layla.
She explained to us how she uses her other senses such as touch and hearing to allow her to participate in activities such as archery, painting and abseiling. We were able to read her brail book, use her walking cane and discuss the special technology she uses to pour a cup of water!
Carole explained that not everyone that has difficulties with their sight will have a guide dog and some people may carry a cane to support manoeuvring around new locations. The white support cane is designed primarily to offer physical support and stability to someone who is blind or partially sighted. Its white colour means the cane also works to make others aware the user has sight loss. White support canes need to be measured so that it is the correct height for the person using it. Some partially sighted people will use a symbol cane. This is to show others that they might need support and have limited sight. It was fascinating as we were able to understand how all of our senses are incredibly valuable and play an important role within our own lives. It was so lovely to meet Carole & Layla and we feel very lucky indeed to have had this incredible opportunity.
