Year 6 learning blog - 3/1/23

Throughout Autumn term, Year 6 learnt lots of new and exciting things!

In maths, we have learnt all about fractions! We began finding equivalent fractions and understanding how they relate to one another, this was just the start of working with fractions... We moved onto adding and subtracting fractions as well as adding and subtracting with mixed number fractions too! Towards the end of the term, we learnt to find fractions of amounts and how to multiple and divide fractions by a whole number. Although this term brought some new learning, we stayed resilient through challenging times. We have also been using other opportunities to recap and revisit some known areas of maths and refresh our memories as well as apply them in different contexts.

In History, we have really enjoyed unpicking the effect of WWII on the world and the impact the significant event had on the world. We focused on how the war affected the children in England and Germany. We learnt about the experience that evacuees had and considered their emotions and thoughts at a challenging time. You will see from the images below, that we have explored the difference between Germany’s attack on Coventry during the Battle of Britain and Britain's attack on Dresden, as we compared the similarities and differences of both.

In Science this term we learnt about electricity and circuits. We enjoyed learning and creating different circuits. A new learning episode focussed on parallel circuits. We learned that a parallel circuit contains multiple pathways rather than just one consistent link. The current of electricity flowing through the parallel circuit divides its energy so that if one components (bulb, buzzer or switch) stops working, it won’t stop the other components from working. Below is an example of a piece work that we completed to show we understood the similarities and differences between series and parallel circuits.

Finally, our Writing journey was incredibly interesting as wrote letters to our idols. We focused on Marcus Rashford and how inspirational he. We have been writing about the traits and values that people inspire us have. We found that our inspirational people have some common values to us! They persevere and stay resilient through difficult times. They keep a positive outlook going and are determined to achieve their very best. We recognised that these values are the same as our school values and that these helped these inspirational people to achieve great things within their lifetime so far. This learning journey was not only inspiring for us to see what impact people can have on our world, but also how anyone can be an architect of a better world! We recognised that any challenge helps you to grow and learn something new. This in turn develops us as people that can influence on the world in new ways that we might not have known or understood before.
