Calshot - Year 5
Year 5 had an extraordinary visit to Calshot activity centre for a day of adventurous activities! It started off by walking through the centre, past the enormous climbing walls, ready to start our activities… we wondered what skills we might need for what lay ahead!
We were so excited to experience skiing on the dry slope. We first ensured we were suited and booted with our skis and shoes, which felt very strange to walk around in! Once we made our way onto the slopes, we learnt how to put our skis on. We showed great resilience climbing to the top of our slope using our skis and then whizzing back down.
Next we conquered the low ropes. It was a challenging activity which required a large amount of teamwork as well as good communication skills. Each part of the low ropes course was different, leading to different challenges, some solved independently and others we had to solve together.
We had a great time trialling archery. We learnt about the different parts of the bow, as well as how to correctly hold it, ensuring we were safe at all times. We then learnt how to place the arrow in the bow, by clicking the flight to the string and to stand as tall and confidently as possible. We then released the arrows towards a target about 10m away aiming for the centre of the target. At times it was frustrating as we didn’t always hit the target however we never gave up and were determined to improve each time.
What an adventurous day so far! We thoroughly enjoyed rock climbing. Another tough challenge needing lots of courage and determination to complete! We learnt how to put on a safety harness as well as learn how to securely fasten ourselves to the ropes before climbing. We worked in teams as one person scaled the wall and the others kept hold of the rope. We also got to experience bouldering on a low wall climbing sideways along the wall, working on gripping the holds carefully and climbing through obstacles. Well done Year 5, we were incredibly impressed at your ability to demonstrate our school values throughout a variety of challenging activities!
