Year 1 Pip and Pap Phonics

Our Year 1 parents have been supporting their children to practise applying their phonics at school, with a special focus on 'alien words', or 'pseudo-words!'

Did you know that 'pseudo-words' are used in the Key Stage 1 phonics screening check, to ensure that children can use and apply the alphabetic code to unknown words? This shows teachers that pupils are secure in using their phonics as a 'strategy' when faced with unfamiliar words in their reading, instead of guessing or using pictorial clues.

Did you know that our school phonics scheme, Pip and Pap, has more than 100 characters with "alien names" - to support children with practising to decode unfamiliar words? How many aliens have you met within the reading scheme this year?

If you'd like any further information about the Phonics Screening Check in June, click here for our parental presentation, or ask your child's class teacher for more details.
